Many people are asking why Christianity is on the decline in Europe and North America. Researchers and authors have written a plethora of books analyzing the ongoing trend. And despite all its attention, precious little has been done about it. How could this be? Western missionaries have contributed so much to the growth of Christianity in the majority-world – Latin America, South America, Africa, India and China where Christianity continues to grow exponentially. Today’s podcast is part one of a two part series discussing this trend. Buckle up. We’ll be taking a hard-hitting, if not uncomfortable, look at the question of the decline of Christianity, its biblical worldview that was once the moral compass of the West, the Mission of God, the biblical purpose of the Church, Culture, generational divide, and the now near inability of Christians to transmit biblical worldview and faith to future generations.
In Christianity in the Post-Modern West – Part One, we address the background of this decline supported by research from leading church researchers as Steve Hollinghurst, Ed Stetzer, George Barna, and the Pew Research Center. We look at the institutional church and find that many believers have drifted from God’s redemptive purpose in mission. Consider this, for all the good Christian community performs in society, America is now the third largest unreached people in the world behind only India and China.
This makes America a mission field in need of re-evangelization. Enjoy this two part discussion of our challenge and how getting back God’s redemptive mission (Missio Dei) in the proclamation of the gospel and faithful presence in our local communities can once again help shape the direction of our culture. Times such as these need strong “sending” churches to our local communities. I would encourage the much needed faithful with the words of Isaiah 60:1-4 “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you, and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.”
